Book Redesign & Template National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency produces the United States Coast Pilot, a series of nine regional sailing directions that give detailed navigational information for US coastal waters and the Great Lakes. These 500-1000 page technical references are used by commercial pilots, as well as recreational boaters. The redesign, phased in over several years, was based on end-user surveys that indicated the need for: larger and clearer text; better-defined sections within each book; larger color photos; tabular data that was easy to read; cross-references; white space for the user's handwritten notes; and clearer identification among the books in the series. The design also had to meet many technical requirements mandated by NOAA and the Coast Guard. The software and production methods had to import GIS and other data from sources throughout the federal government, as well as allow for easy updating of the information.
We worked closely with the editorial and production staff to review, evaluate, and select appropriate software to produce the volumes. We also assisted in revising the editorial format used throughout the volumes to make it easier for pilots and sailors to find critical technical information. Colors were selected to identify each volume, which is printed on the spine and both front and back covers.
We also designed software templates for their in-house production staff to use, digital versions of the mast/flags, maps, and other artwork for the newsletter. We provided training in desktop publishing and on-site consultation during the transition.
We continue to provide expert photo-imaging services and produce the covers for each volume while NOAA's staff produces the interior text content.
